Celebrate National Homeownership Month: Why Owning a Home Still Matters

June is here, and that means it’s time to celebrate National Homeownership Month! While Realtors® champion the dream of homeownership all year long, this month gives us a special opportunity to reflect on what having a place to call home truly means.
A Quick Look Back
National Homeownership Month began in 1995 when President Bill Clinton proclaimed June 5 as National Homeownership Day. Then in 2002, President George W. Bush expanded the celebration to the entire month of June. He highlighted that a home provides shelter, safety, and stability—and is often a family’s most important financial investment.
That message still rings true today.
More Than Just a Roof
Owning a home isn’t just about four walls and a backyard. It’s about building a life. Homeownership provides freedom, privacy, and a sense of control over your space. It also brings long-term benefits, like growing equity and increasing net worth.
Even more powerful is the ability for homeowners to create generational wealth—passing down value to their children and grandchildren. That kind of financial foundation opens doors for future opportunities and helps break cycles of poverty and instability.
How Are We Doing?
According to the National Association of Realtors®, the U.S. homeownership rate in 2023 was about 65%. In Pennsylvania, we’re doing even better with a rate of nearly 70%.
Still, there’s work to be done to close the gap for underrepresented communities. The Black homeownership rate stands at just 45%, compared to 72% for White households. Hispanic and Asian households are at 51% and 63%, respectively. These numbers remind us that the dream of homeownership isn’t equally accessible for everyone—yet.
Realtors® Make a Difference
Realtors® are on the front lines of making homeownership possible. From guiding first-time buyers to advocating for fair housing laws, they’re committed to helping every person achieve their dream of homeownership.
In April, we celebrate Fair Housing Month, and in June, many Realtors® from Pennsylvania head to Day on the Hill in Harrisburg to meet with legislators and advocate for housing issues that impact our communities.
As PAR President Bill Lublin says, “We believe that the American Dream should be a dream that is attainable by all Americans. Our goal is to help every Pennsylvanian realize and achieve that dream.”
